Tunnin mittaisessa "syövytys"testissä ruostuvan piipun paino "nousi" 0,00005 g (laskettu keskiarvo useasta mittauksesta, vaaka näyttää siis vain 4 desimaalia) ja ruostumattomalla 0,0001 g.

Kokeilin liuottaisiko apteekista ostettu 20-30% (en muista tarkkaa %-arvoa) ammoniakkiliuos hölmöyksissäni supistusholkkiin jumittamaani messinkihylsyä. Holkki (Redding) uiskenteli suljetussa lasipurkissa ammoniakkiliuoksessa pari viikkoa. Hylsystä liukeni liuokseen heikko sininen väri, mutta eipä juuri muuta. Sain hylsyn lopulta holkista mekaanisin konstein. Päähuomioni tässä oli kuitenkin se, että itse holkissa ei näkynyt minkäänlaisia paljain silmin havaittavia syöpymiä. Miten holkkiteräs sitten poikkeaa piipputeräksestä, sitä en tiedä.

I was able to get all the stuff I needed at Lowes. Here is a list of what you need:



1) 6v lantern battery $3.92

1) 11/32x3/8x1 (#00) rubber stopper $.87

3) 11/32x1/8 rubber grommets $3.21

4) 22-14 AWG alligator clips $1.28

1) 1/8x4' steel rod $1.57

2) 3'-4' long 14 AWG wire $1.00

You'll also need ammonia and vinegar to make up the solution to put in the bore



I cut down the steel rod some so it wasn't as long and also trimmed down the grommets with a razor blade so the solution could flow down the barrel. You attach the alligator clips to the 14 AWG wire, I just crimped them down on the wire. Plug the breech with the #00 rubber stopper and insert the steel rod with three grommets spaced equally apart. Fill the barrel with your solution, 2 parts water 1 part ammonia and vinegar. Attach the wires to the battery then the positive to the barrel and the negative to the steel rod. It should start to bubble if not you have a short and need to make sure the steel rod is not touching the barrel. Run set up from 10 min. to 45 min. then unhook set up, remove steel rod and dump out solution. The rod will be covered in black all you do is wipe off and you can then steel wool the rod to get it good and clean. Clean bore as you normally would and repeat if nessary. Don't be surprised at the crud that bubbles out and you may need to keep topping of the barrel as it bubbles out. You can also try a 50/50 mix of water and ammonia or some use straight ammonia.
