Will the New CF Sniper's Rifle have a New Round, Too? Canadian snipers have been well served by their C3A1 but the 7.62mm rifles are worn out. Parts supply and maintenance have become a problem. Technological developments have also passed the old C3A1s by. Two developments will have attracted the attention of the CF. In the mid '80s, the British Army's competition* for a new sniper's rifle was won by a radical new design by AI (Accuracy International). Then, the Finnish Army adopted a new, purpose- designed sniper's round, the 0.338" (8.6mm) Lapua, designed to penetrate up to five layers of modern body armour at 1000m.
Testing Future Sniper's Rifles and Suppressors in October 2001, the CF's Land Forces Trials and Evaluations Unit and the Infantry School 'Sniper Cell' began testing new sniper's rifle designs. At the same time, suppressors were trialled — these serving to reduce the firing signature, both noise and muzzle blast. Several suppressor designs and seven distinct models of rifle from six different manufacturers were demonstrated at CFB Gagetown.
Among the candidates were AI's .338 AWM**, the Blaser LSR2, and PGM's Mini-Hecate.*** All three are of radical design based on a rigid frame (steel, in the case of PGM) to which composite 'furniture' (what there is of it) is attached. Both 7.62mm (.308) and .338 rifles were tested. Reportedly, the CF favours .338 which provides many of the capabilities of the much heavier 12.7mm Tac-50 Big Mac.
* An unsuccessful British competitor was Parker-Hale's M85 (in effect an updated C3A1). Accuracy International's winning L96 design is set apart by its integrated design – all major components (including the stainless steel barrel) are mounted to a rigid aluminum chassis.** The AWM's (Arctic Warfare Magnum) bolt action is designed to operate without binding down to -40°C. Initially designed for .308 (first adopted by the Swedes as their 7.62mm PSG-90), the Magnum fires .338" Lapua rounds. The AWM has been adopted by the British Army as the L119 squad support weapon (taking advantage of that powerful round) rather than a sniper's rifle. In CF service, a new .338- calibre rifle would probably be used for anti-personnel/counter-sniping allowing 12.7mm Tac-50s to be focused on their anti-matériel roles.*** As its name suggests, the Mini-Hecate is a scaled-down version of PGM's 12.7mm Hecate. PGM products, which are Swiss-designed but built in France, are marketed in North America by FN. Germany's Blaser is represented by Swiss SIG. The Blaser LRS2 (or Long-Range Sniper) is a straight-pull (as opposed to rotating bolt) design. LRS2s are also called R93 Tacticals, a reference to their hunting rifle origins.
Not all rifles demonstrated at Gagetown were chambered for.338 Lapua. The 7.62mm Coyote by Prairie Gun Works* fires the same round as C3A1s (match-grade 7.62mm ammunition is called the .308" Winchester by snipers). The .308 Coyote (and the related CoyoTi which uses a good deal of titanium in its construction) is essentially a 'sniperized' hunting rifle. Uncomfortable as it may be, the requirements for big-game hunting and military sniping rifles are not that different. The developments in hunting and target shooting rifles have, if anything, influenced trends in specialized sniping rifles. The Coyote uses the McMillan A4 Tactical stock and the sight is mounted on a Picatinny-type rail – features more commonly associated with military rifles but now widely used both hunters and target shooters.
Sako's Suomen Shooter and Kentish KitOne of the .338-chambered CF candidates came from Finland, appropriately enough. The Sako** TRG-42 is now the standard Finnish sniper rifle. English RPA is a more recent entry into the sniper field with their.338 BMF based on their Quadlock action, well-known in target shooting circles. RPA is reportedly satisfied with the BMF's performance during its Gagetown trials even though the rifles used temporary stocks.
* Prairie Gun Works of Winnipeg now develops and markets its military rifles under the revised name of PGW Defence Technologies Inc.** Riihimäki-based Sako is now owned by Italy's Beretta. The .338 TRG-42 is descended from the TRG-41 differing primarily in the design of the stock. Sako has produced weapons for the Finnish Army for generations including the current service rifles, the AK47-based M76.

Prairie 'Wolf – PGWDTI's . 338 Lapua EntrantPrairie Gun Works also demonstated a .338 weapon at CFB Gagetown. Their .338 Timberwolf is the big brother of the .308 Coyotes. Employing essentially similar construction, the scaled-up .338 Timberwolf has primarily stainless steel components (including the helically-fluted bolt) and a five-round magazine. Like the Coyote, the .338 Timberwolf is seated in a patterned McMillan Bros A4 fiberglass stock* and its Leupold sight is rail-mounted.

'So close and yet so near' – Tripping on the Replacement Finishing LineThe Timberwolf was the only trialled weapon able to meet the CF's 1250m accuracy specification (exceeding the CF criteria with a 99% hit ratio). But, none of the contestants where able to meet the CF's 800m requirement. The 800m spec would prove to be flawed, unfortunately. The result is that none of the designs demonstrated at Gagetown have been adopted by the CF. It remains to be seen whether completely new trials will be run, or whether the same contestants will be invited to participate in a revised 800m requirement. We may find that we need more than the C3A1 if ISAF moves out of Kabul.
* The CF has experience with these composite stocks having refitted their C3A1s in the early 1990s. Such stocks are lighter than wooden components and require no maintenance. Another advantage of the Tactical stocks is their embedded camouflage pattern and colouring.** Titanium cools more quickly than steel, it is also lighter. The PGWDTI suppressor is of the quick-detach variety (ie: no handtools are required). According to the manufacturer, "the report of the rifle ... is impossible to hear past about 150 yards ... with full power loads."

Sound Suppressors
PGWDTI weapons suppressors are state of the art and are available in Stainless and Titanium construction. They are of a sealed unit construction and they install and remove without tools.
We currently produce suppressors for the following:

Moi,
Joo, kyllähän CF vielä testaa niitä, on testannut käytännössä Afganistanissa ja Irakissakin. Riippuen lähteistä, toiset väittävät, että on jo virallisesti valittu CF:n ta-kivääriksi, toiset väittää, että virallisia papereita ei ole vielä allekirjoitettu ja tekniset testit jatkuvat - tiedä häntä, mikä on lopullinen totuus.
Eräs väittämä noin pari vuotta sitten oli se, ettei PGW pienenä firmana (4 henkilöä) pysty tuottamaan CF:n tarvitsemaa riittävää määrää .338LM Timberwolfeja riittävän ajoissa CF:lle. Puhumattakoon varaosista, koulutusmanuaaleista, käyttökoulutuksesta jne...Tästä syystä CF ei olisi ainakaan tuolloin vahvistanut virallisesti kiväärin valintaa - näin siis pari vuotta sitten väitettiin (sai myös jonkin verran mediakohua aikaan sekä Kanadassa, että USA:ssa). Vaikea sanoa, mikä tässäkin on lopullinen totuus.
Oli miten oli, loppukäyttäjien (kanadalaiset ja amerikkalaiset tarkka-ampujat) kommentit, näkemykset ja mielipiteet ovat olleet lähinnä .338LM Timberwolfia ylistäviä. Aika näyttänee mitä lopulta tapahtuu...

Ööh...mitäs kummaa tässä nyt oli?
Mielestäni noista testien "hit ratioita" on turha oikein hehkuttaa missään artikkeleissa, nimittäin varmasti kaikki hyvin tehdyt kiväärit käyvät tarkasti.
Esimerkkinä Jalosen 338 pyssykkä joka oikealla latauksella pärjää varmasti vertailussa mille tahansa jenkkien ym hehkuttamille "UltimateSuperTactical" -kivääreille.
Sama pätee ainakin omaan 42:een, tuolla artikkelissa mainitulla 1.25km matkalla jantteri on nurin käytännössä joka laakilla (ilman Tactical Titanium suujarrua) JOS ampuja osaa homman ja lukee tuulia oikein. Ja jos ei osaa niin siitähän on turha asetta syyttää
Samat fysiikan lainaisuudet varmastikin pätevät myös Timberwolfin piipusta ammuttuihin luoteihin. Eli kyllä silläkin varmasti saa huteja aikaiseksi, joskus jopa yrittämättäkin. :wink:

Tuntematta Kanadan kivääritestien tarkkaa sisältöä voisi kuitenkin kuvitella että jos kolmesta testatusta kivääristä vain yksi läpäisee 1250 metrin tarkkuusvaatimuksen niin ne kaksi muuta oli huonompia. Vahva oletus on että ammunnat on tehty samoissa olosuhteissa ja samoilla ampujilla.
Vaikea tosin kuvitella että testispeksi on täysin "hanskassa" jos 1250m testit aseet läpäisee ja 800 metrin matkalla samat aseet ei läpäise.
Veikkaanpa että jos PGW tosiaan on 4-5 hengen asefirma niin se ei pääse CF:n viralliseksi toimittajaksi ikinä. Ei he pysty toimittamaan ja tarvittaessa huoltamaan edes muutamaa sataa asetta A1-laadulla missään järjellisessä ajassa. Pienellä onnella heistä toki voisi tulla uusi Accuracy joka sekin aloitti pienestä.
Sinänsä jos verrataan aseseppäkustomia johonkin sarjatuotantoaseeseen kuten TRG-42 niin olisi aika noloa jos tehdasvakio ase pesee aseseppien testejä varten viimeisen päälle virittämät kustomaseet.
338LM:ssä sotilaskäyttöön menee tällä hetkellä lähinnä AW Magnumia ja TRG-42:sta. Blaser LR2 ei taida olla missään armeijassa käytössä, sama juttu Dakota Longbowilla ja AR-30:llä. RPAn Quadlockista voi todeta kuvien perusteella että jos se toimii mudassa ja hiekassa hyvin niin hattua nostan. On toki mahdollista että toimii.

Pointtini oli se että käytännössä nuo testit eivät harrastajaa koske siinä mielessä että kukin hakee optimilataukset omalle aseelleen -ja saa näin kaiken juuri omasta konstruktiostaan irti.
Jutussa ei ilmeisesti käytettyä patruunaa mainittu, mutta olettaisin että käsilatauksia ne eivät ainakaan olleet.
Ja jos haluaisin olla oikein epäileväinen luonne, niin tietenkin ajattelisin niin että kustompaja on kalvannut ja hartaasti hienosäätänyt testissä käytetyn aseensa juuri tuolle testipatruunatyypille sopivaksi... :D
Tämäkään ei toki asetta sinällään huononna, on varmasti hieno ase, mutta toki tällainen tieto toisi suoraan aseiden keskinäiseen tarkkuusverailuun "yhden ulottuvuuden lisää".
Ja edelleen olen jääräpäisesti sitä mieltä että suomalaiset sepät osaavat tehdä
Minä olen siitä samaa mieltä että ei tarkan kiväärin tekeminen ole mitään ihmeellistä. Suomessa sepät sitä paitsi tekevät maailmanluokan tarkkuusaseista noin 1/3 siitä hinnasta mitä USAssa.
Se missä USAssa on asiat ehkä vähän paremmin on siinä, että maastokäyttöön hyvin soveltuvia mutta silti tarkkoja aseita osaa rakentaa aika moni aseseppä. Siitä pitää huolen USMC:n asepajat, samoin kuin US Armyn AMUn aseseppäkurssit. Kysyntää kenttäkelpiisille TA-kivääreille on myös hieman enemmän kuin Suomessa :-)
Se että USAssa maksaa mikä tahansa Rem 700 viritelmä 2000 dollaria + perusase on suomalaisesta näkökulmasta aika rapean hintaista. On niissä toki yleensä jonkinlainen keinoainetukki jo tuohon rahaan.
Tarkkuuden puolesta samaan pääsee uudelleen piiputtamalla Tikka M55:n uudella Mäkisen tai Lothar Waltherin piipulla huolellisella asesepällä. Yhteensä tuollainen projekti maksaa ehkä 900 Euroa. Eli käytetty ase 500 Euroa ja uusi piippu asennettuna 400 Euroa (noin).
USAssa muuten asesepän ei välttämättä ole tarvinnut käydä ikinä missään alan opinahjossa voidakseen toimia aseseppänä. Siksi siellä laatuhajonta aseseppien kesken on huomattavasti isompaa kuin Euroopassa tai Suomessa joissa lainsäädäntö asettaa aika tiukkoja vaatimuksia sille kuka ja millä koulutuksella saa aseita rahaa vastaa korjata tai virittää.

Timberwolf kaliiperissa .338 Lapua Magnum on valittu virallisesti Kanadan armeijan uudeksi ta-kivääriksi. Näin ollen se pesi kaikki edellä mainitut kilpailijansa. Päälle tulee US Optics SN3 - LIT Military Grade 3.2-17x44 T-PAL scope.
Mitä ilmeisimmin kyseessä siis on .338 Lapua Magnum kiväärien "Stradivarius" tai "Leijonakuningas" joka pesee kaikki muut .338LM:t mennen tullen...

No nytpä viimeisessä kaliberissa testailtiin tätä Timberwolf 338 Lapua Magnumia,tosi tyylikäs ase muuten,mutta mutta se tarkkuus 300m (95-96mm ka) Lapuan omilla tehdaspatruunoilla.Eipä nyt niin mitään kovaa kasaa,ja olipa tuota painoakin siunaantunut pelkälle aseelle karvan yli 7kg. Jotta tämmönen ase kanukeilla,mikä mahtaapi olla hinta suomeen :cry: :cry: tuotuna ilmeisesti hel.........tin kallis!!!!!.
Silmään pisti tuossa Kaliberin jutussa tavanomaisen tarkkuuden lisäksi aika pitkä 1-rivinen 5 patruunan lipas. Ei kovin kenttäkelpoiselta vaikuta koska lipas ulkonee aseesta aika paljon. Kyllä se varmaan toimii mutta 2-rivinen lipas olisi kyllä paikallaan. Lippaan salpa oli myös vähän heikossa paikassa, ei toisaalta kyllä varmaankaan putoile omia aikojaan aseesta.
Lehtijutussa ei mainittu mutta olen ymmärtänyt että Timberwolfin Picatinny-kiskot on normaalisti kallistettu eteenpäin 20 tai 30 MOA tilaajan mieltymyksistä riippuen.

Ei noita ulkomaaelävien testejä voi paljoa tuijotella kun patruuna vaikuttaa käytännössä todella paljon.

pahoittelen aikaisempia viestejä, joissa kerron Kanadan armeijan uudeksi tähtäimeksi olisi valittu USO. Näin ei ole, vaan Kanadan armeija valitsi .338 LM:n tarkka-ampujakivääriensä päälle saman Schmidt & Benderin kuin USMC.
:arrow: Näin ollen Kanadan armeijan .338 LM Timberwolf kiväärien päällä on S&B 3-12x50 PMII DT:t :!: eli samat kuin USMC:llä.
Erehdys USO:n valinnasta pohjautui Timberwolfin valmistajan PGW:n omiin alkuperäisiin ilmoituksiin ja siihen, että he tarjosivat Kandan armeijalle pakettina Timberwolfia USO:lla. Samoin USO on voimakkaasti väittänyt ja markkinoinut, että USO olisi valittu Kanadan armeijan tähtäimeksi, vaikka näin ei oikeasti ole tapahtunut.
Pahoittelen erehdystäni, johtuen em. syistä.
Jotta valintakysymys tulisi lopullisesti täysin selväksi toistettakoon vielä, että Kanadan armeijan uusi tähtäin .338 LM Timberwolfien päällä on S&B 3.12x50 PMII (identtinen tähtäin USMC:n valinnan kanssa) eikä USO.
US Optics SN3 - LIT Military Grade 3.2-17x44 T-PAL -tähtäintä ei ole valittu mikään maan asevoimien tähtäimeksi.

Mielenkiintoista...meinaan tuo suurennuskerroin 3-12. On näköjään muodostunut jonkin asteiseksi standardiksi eri maiden uusimmissa TA-tähtäin hankinnoissa.
Muistelen aikoja, kun lapsena leikittiin hiekkalaatikolla sotaleikkejä. Sen syvällisemmin menemättä detaljeihin oli lopputulos kuitenkin aina se, että molemmillä osapuolilla oli lähes samat sotilaat ja sama vahvuus, lähes samat varusteet, lähes sama taktiikka jne.
Ei niinkään kiinnitetty huomiota siihen, mihin kaikkea tarvittiin tai tuli käyttää, mutta kun yhdellä oli tuli toisellakin olla.
Sama perusajatus pätee isompienkin poikien leikeissä ja hankinnoissa :shock: :lol:
Kaveri soitteli eilen, oli ostaa täräyttänyt 338LM:n. Kyseli multa neuvoja latauslaitteiden hankintaan. Pitkähylsyisistä toinen ladattava kuulosti olevan 375H&H. Mites on, pystyykö peruspuristimilla (Hornady, RCBS:n uusi Rock Chucker) näppärästi näitä lataamaan vai kannattaako hommata joku pitkäkurkkuinen malli? Erityisesti kiinnostaa miten käy LM:n ja Forsterin luodittajan kanssa. Suosittelin hommaamaan jonkun lataussarjan niin pääsee hankinnoissa helpommalla, onko suosikkeja nimenomaan näille? Minulla on kyllä vuosien mittaan kantapäänkautta opittua tietoa latausasioista ja lupasin kaveria neuvoa alkuun, mutta pitäisi vaan tietää vaatiiko homma mitään speciaalia kun mulla ei ole ko. kalibereista mitään kokemusta, eikä yleensäkään noin pitkähylsyisistä.
Hornadyn prässillä ja Forsterin BR holkeilla onnistuu 338LM:än lataaminen vallan mainiosti, kokemusta on. Ladattava patruuna sujautetaan luoti edellä luodinasetusholkkiin ja sen jälkeen hylsy pitimeen.
Hornadyn 007:lla onnistuu kyllä 375 H&H:n lataaminen.
Entä hylsyjen trimmaus? Mikä sorvi vai suosittelenko Leen käsityökaluja, joilla muuten pärjäilen itsekin. Muista kalibereista hän aikoi ladata ainakin 45/70:stä ja 222:sta. Ainakin Hornadyllä ilmeisesti noihin kaikkiin ei tule sopivaa pilottia?
Lyman Universal, siinä ei tarvitse räplätä hylsynpitimien kanssa vaan hylsyn kiinnitys hoidetaan nerokkaalla pikalukituksella. Tämän hylsynkiinnityksen nerokkuus on siinä että se lukitsee kaikki hylsytyypit 100% varmuudella, myös kiinnityspiste on sellainen että hylsyt tosiaankin tulee saman mittaisiksi.
Monia trimmereitä on kokeiltu ja omistettu mutta tähän trimmeriin on päädytty enkä usko että ihan heti olen sitä vaihtamassa.
