Lainaa Unertl The Original USMC Sniper Scope



Unertl is under new leadership. Recently Rocky Green (Col. USMC Reserve and Vet of Gulf War) obtained ownership of the company. The Original USMC Sniper Scope, because its the only scope built to the exact same specifications as John Unertl sold the USMC many years ago. Two versions of the scope are made. One with a Ballistic Drop Compensator (BDC) for the 7.62 Nato 118LR round and the other for the 50BMG M33Ball round. The compensator wheels are changeable, by the manufacture. These are the two BDCÕs currently used by the USMC. The USMC Scope has a wire MilDot Reticle. The reticle is made by Premiere Reticle Co. Frankly the best in the industry and the original maker for the USMC scopes. It is a fixed ten power, one inch steel main tube, 32mm objective and 32mm ocular lens. The BDC is unique in that it not only allows for the standard range adjustment, it also allows for fine changes to be made without disturbing the range settings. A sniper can quickly dial for any range to one thousand yards, in one hundred-yard increment, and then make fine adjustments of several minutes up, down, right or left. Since, a path of a bullet is changed by atmospheric conditions; most BDCs are designed for quick, rough estimations and use an average ballistic trajectory curve for the round. The BDC of the USMC scope allows a sniper to have pinpoint precision under all conditions and the quickness of a BDC. This is truly the best of both worlds. The USMC Scope being made of steel is not light at 2 lb 3 ounces, but it is tough. Under serious abuse the tubes may dent but the optics and internals continue to function. This is one of if not the most durable sniper scopes ever issued to any military! At just about ten inches it is compact. Optic quality is outstanding with the lenses being clear to the edges and the color being correct. The optics are the best in any scope of this size and power I have used. The lenses are made in America, a nice change from many others. The objective is adjustable for Parallex, but only by use of a special wrench. The USMC sets the scopes initially for five hundred yards. The scopes to sell on the open market will have the wrench included. The adjustment is very simple to make and requires no more skill than to zero the rifle. Its a tough and capable as the originals. All USA Made and original design!

Our first production run of this venerable veteran sold out before we had even completed the production! The second run had sold prior to completion of assembly! This third run is in response to the success of the prior runs and continued tremendously high demand for these scopes.

History of this scope



Conceived in the late 1960's, made a reality in the early 1970's and instituted universally in the late 1970's, this scope was named the MST-100 (.308 model) and saw service as the 10X Marine Corps "SNIPER SCOPE". Sometimes called the "U----l", it was only partially co-invented by John U-----l, while some very astute Marine Corps officers had a significant hand in the development. Several variations have been made over the years, including F.B.I., Canadian Military, and U.S.M.C. .50 cal models. There have been three major U.S.M.C. model function changes and/or additions over the years. These are the M40, M40A3 on the .308 model and the MST-150(a .50 cal. BMG model). In addition, the BDC turret and windage knobs have been changed twice with three major changes. We, at U.S.OPTICS offer all changes and variations, in fact, we invented the M40A3 (the current U.S.M.C. model), as the old U----l model simply would not work on the new M40 rifle. During the period that the original contractor supplied the scope to the Corps, he, according to his wife, never sold them to the public, as the legend goes. It is alleged that a large corporate conglomerate (who had never made scopes before) bought and or acquired all or partial rights to the John U----l company. In what we believe was an effort to get the Corps contract, this large company approached us to buy us. We refused their offers and they bought the U----L Company (allegedly) to get the contract and make the scope. When they couldn't, they sued us, we sued them and a settlement followed with them unable to restrict us from making the scopes for the corps.. Even today they are attempting to damage us by calling us imposters and freuds. Strangely enough, we are told that big corporation has fallen on hard times and allegedly sold the U---l company to other individuals who also have never made scopes and are trying to hurt us with the ads that you currently see on their website. Mrs. U----l told us and others that she sold the U----l name but not the John U----l name.



United States Marine Corps telescopic sight contract.



It is important to eliminate all confusion (from scurrilous competitors) about who supplies these sights to the U.S.M.C.. U.S. OPTICS is the official U.S.M.C. M40 scope replacement, repair, and refurbishment contractor-period. We make the official U.S.M.C. M40 scope-end of story.



In approx. 2000, Major Tafolla of U.S.M.C. Systems Command approached Mrs. Unertl to continue to refurbish and supply their M40 scopes. He was told she/they could no longer do the M40 scopes, as her husband had passed away and they had no employees who could do the job satisfactorily. She said she was planning to sell the company. She recommended us as capable of doing the job. In approx. 2001 Major Taffolla and his officers visited us, saw the company and asked us to do the work. We won the contract for scope refurbishment, they ere extremely happy and have been with us since then. We have made and refurbished many scopes, modified and made changes for the corps and have a great relationship with them.

The official U.S.M.C. 10x sniper riflescope we make is now even better than the original! This remarkable optic of some 20+ years has many new improvements but is still the same sight.
