Otsikko: Problems with higher magnification?
Kirjoitti: jtlassila99 - heinäkuu 03, 2026, 19:32

How do I train my brain and body not to try to react to the tiny movement of the crosshairs on the X?

I'm practicing with my R700P and I feel like I'm pulling shots at 15x.

In the last target, after shooting the 1st shot shot low at 7, I turned the magnification down to about 6x or so and shot the next 4 shots touching high in the X-ring.

I have noticed this same thing before many times.  I feel like I shoot my M39/SOV clone at 4x better than this gun.

It is hard to see the crosshairs at 5-6x with a FFP scope though.

This is the last target.  1st shot is the low one, shot at 15x.  The next 4 are touching, shot at about 6x.

Higher magnification shows all the problems just better. One can not keep the rifle still and the movement of the reticle is a natural phenomen with higher magnifications. Breathing is important . Do not stop breathing but shoot when your lungs are empty but you have not started inhaling again. If the shoot feels forced do not take it but start the process again.

A natural point of aim (NAP) is needed, then load the bipods a little. Close your eyes for  few seconds, open them and the target should be in the middle.  If not then correct your position until it is solid. The back bag needs to be supported properly or elevation will change from shot to shot. The trigger must be pressed and not slapped and follow through must be good. If everything goes as planned the shots should be in the target.

Bipod height is important, too low or high and you need to force the reticle to the center of the target. Forcing the rifle will worsen the groups.

Basicially it is all about fundamentals done right.

Good instruction!

Do you have any drills or exercises for how to make your brain accept the slight shaking of the crosshairs?

I'm thinking of putting my old Viper 4-16x44 HST SFP scope back on the rifle.  That would give me a good reticle to shoot at low magnification in the match.  Being a known distance, target matc, FFP scope is not really needed.

Plus, the Viper is 225g lighter.  With the 50mm FFP scope my rifle was just over the 13.0 lbs class limit.  I was hoping to shoot in the F-Practical class.

OK to reply in Finnish.  I fully understand it but writing in english is easier for me at the moment.

I suggest you just force yourself to shoot with higher magnifications. Shooting with less magnifications means that you are not trying solve the problem but circumvent it. That is ok but does not solve your problem.

Yksi tapa on opetella ampumaan sydämen sykkeiden välissä eli rytmittää laukaukset.

I think user HJu gives perfect tips.
I struggled with same problem last year when I started shooting regularly.
It takes lots of time and practice to found perfect prone position which works for me and getting good natural point of aim.

Ended up way higher position than first used and also changed jaw well and scope riser so I can easily keep my hole body and head really straight and recoil pad collarbone bone/chest.

Now only using 30x mag for shooting groups so I get good precise POI.

But you can't get totally rid off seeing heartbeats but when you found good position amount of heartbeat is more mentally so try to not think about it. Shooting between heartbeat can be even more tough thing to handle and you can forget other fundamentals which matters even more.

I also prefer a higher position, elbow supported.  I could never get comfortable in the recommended low position, possibly due to my belly.  Is your rifle at about the same height as mine, in the picture?

I did put the Vortex SFP 4-16x scope back on the rifle.  It has a lot stronger reticle.  I feel that the sight picture is better suited for target shooting vs the tactical reticle.  Optically it seemed inferior to the cheaper chinese scope I had on the rifle, which actually helped my brain.

I had a lot easier time holding and squeezing the trigger with the heavy reticle centered on the black rather than trying to keep the tiny center dot on the X with the chinese scope.

These were shot at 16x.  10, 10 and 5 shots.  They do not look much better.  I had some trouble with the rear bag.  But shooting with the stronger reticle felt easier for me.

On Monday, weather permitting, I'll go practice at the long range, up to 1000yds, on steel.

The groups look good. You are not going to get consistent 10 round sub-0.5 Moa groups with a typical factory rifle anyway. Ok, maybe with a TRG or AIAX but not with a Rem700.

Target shooting 1000 yards is much more about managing the wind than shooting tiny bench rest groups.

Nice groups for that kind of lightweight setup. If you get around 1 moa 10rd group its already good 🔥

I have like really high scope setup. It is 74mm center of bore to scope center. Bipod height usually around 22-23cm ground to clamp and quite large AG plus one gamechanger rear bag feather light filling which is easier to manipulate than heavy sand.

How about adding suppressor?

A suppressor requires a special permit.  I have an application submitted with the US ATF now for 60 days.  Maybe they are holding it up because I said some not so nice things about Il Trumpo in some.   Makes you wonder...
